Winter freeze 2009.......there was endangered wildlife throughout the State! Here is our rescue on Cape San Blas, St. Joe Bay. 1,800 Turtles were brought in from the bay. Originally the estimate was around 400 turtles in this bay so everyone was surprised. The call for help went throughout our community. It wasn't long before we had people scouting the bay for floating turtles in their boats. Some went out in kayaks to load up turtles near the shore. The Fish and Wildlife Commission had airboats scouting the area, which are illegal under normal conditions. Most of the turtles survived and were released back into the Gulf of Mexico by the Coast Guard. Thanks to all who helped!
